iPadOS 26 introduced a new windowed multitasking system, aiming to offer a more powerful and flexible experience akin to using iPads like traditional laptops. While generally well-received, particularly for its improvements over Stage Manager and broader iPad compatibility, the complete removal of the classic Split View and Slide Over multitasking modes sparked criticism from some users.
Split View, which allowed two apps to share the screen simultaneously, was relatively easy to replicate within the new system. However, the absence of Slide Over, a feature that enabled a small window to overlay the screen for quick access and dismissal, was a major point of contention. Users heavily reliant on Slide Over voiced their concerns, prompting Apple to reconsider.
Responding to user feedback, Apple has reintroduced Slide Over support in the second developer beta of iPadOS 26.1, as reported by MacRumors. This updated version functions similarly to its predecessor, providing an overlay window that sits atop other apps and can be easily invoked and dismissed. Although only one app can be in Slide Over mode at a time, unlike the previous iteration which allowed switching between multiple apps, the new Slide Over window can be repositioned and resized, aligning with the window management capabilities of iPadOS 26. The final version of iPadOS 26.1, along with corresponding updates for iOS, macOS, and other platforms, is expected to be released to the public in October or November, following further beta testing.
