The Free Software Foundation (FSF) is celebrating its 40th anniversary today with a hybrid online and in-person event, broadcasting talks and workshops via a free software livestream on fsf.org/live. The celebration runs from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. EDT, inviting everyone to join the discussion via the #fsf40 IRC channel on Libera.Chat. The event's slogan is "4 decades, 4 freedoms, 4 all users".
During the ceremony, the newly-elected FSF president, Ian Kelling, ceremoniously sliced the 40th-anniversary cake. Kelling, 43, has been a board member since March 2021 and also serves as the organisation's senior systems administrator. His technical experience and commitment to free software were highlighted as invaluable assets. Richard Stallman, FSF founder, praised Kelling's judgment and commitment, while outgoing president Geoff Knauth acknowledged his understanding of free software philosophy and vision for the future.
Kelling will continue his role as senior systems administrator, leading the FSF's tech team. The livestream event includes Free Software Foundation trivia, LibreLocal group lightning talks, and a panel featuring the FSF, Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF), F-Droid, and Sugar Labs, offering a diverse range of perspectives and insights into the world of free software.
