Bose SoundTouch home cinema systems are set to lose key functionality, effectively turning them into basic, non-smart speakers. As of February 18, 2026, Bose will discontinue support for these devices, rendering their cloud-based features and the companion app unusable. This means features such as integrating music streaming services like Spotify and TuneIn, and synchronised multi-room audio playback, will no longer function.
The SoundTouch app is essential for controlling many aspects of the speakers. Once support ends, saved presets won't work, and users will be unable to adjust existing presets. Furthermore, Bose will cease providing security updates for these devices, potentially leaving them vulnerable. Whilst the speakers will still be able to play audio via AUX or HDMI connections, and Bluetooth will still function for wireless playback, Bluetooth introduces more latency than Wi-Fi.
Affected customers can trade in their SoundTouch products for credit, receiving up to $200 towards new purchases. Bose cites evolving technology as the reason for discontinuing support, stating they can no longer sustain the cloud infrastructure needed for these older devices. The company claims to be focused on creating new listening experiences using modern technologies.
The move has been met with frustration from customers who invested significant sums in SoundTouch systems. Some suggest Bose should open-source the development kits to allow users to maintain the speakers themselves. However, Bose has given no indication they are willing to consider this option. The newer Bose app won't support the older SoundTouch speakers. Maintaining the SoundTouch app infrastructure or adapting the new app may not be feasible or worthwhile for Bose. While disappointing for users, they have received more notice than some other smart home device owners have when their gadgets became obsolete.
