California is set to virtually eliminate coal as a power source next month, marking a significant milestone in its fight against climate change. This move comes as the state ceases receiving electricity from the Intermountain Power Plant in Central Utah, effectively ending its reliance on coal-generated power.
The United States has seen a dramatic decrease in coal usage for electricity generation. In 2007, nearly half of the nation's electricity came from coal-fired plants. By 2023, this figure had plummeted to just 16.2%. California has accelerated this trend even further, with only 2.2% of its electricity originating from coal in 2024, almost entirely from the Intermountain plant. The final cut-off from this plant is scheduled for next month.
This transition has been facilitated by advancements in power storage technology. Crucially, the state has managed this shift without experiencing the power shortages that previously plagued it up until 2020. This signals a successful move towards cleaner energy sources while maintaining a reliable power supply for California's residents and businesses.
