Pocket Casts Ad-Free Promise Broken Ads Appear

Podcast app Pocket Casts is facing criticism after some users who paid for an ad-free experience are now seeing advertisements. Reports began surfacing in early September on the Pocket Casts support forum and subreddit, detailing the unexpected appearance of ads for legacy users.

Pocket Casts Ad-Free Promise Broken Ads Appear

According to Matt Mullenweg, CEO of Automattic, Pocket Casts' parent company, the issue is due to a bug and a fix is in the works. Pocket Casts originally launched as a paid app in 2010, with users paying a one-time fee to download it. In 2019, the service transitioned to a subscription-based model and made the app free to download. To appease users who had already paid for the app, the company offered free lifetime access to Pocket Casts Plus, their ad-free premium subscription service, to those who purchased the web or desktop apps before the pricing changes.

Automattic acquired Pocket Casts in 2021. In August 2024, Pocket Casts Lifetime memberships were rebranded as "Pocket Casts Champion". Despite these assurances, the recent reports indicate that some of these long-time users are now experiencing ads within the app, contrary to the ad-free promise made to them. Users are awaiting a resolution to this issue.
