YouTube Music is experimenting with AI hosts under its new "Labs" program, designed to offer users a sneak peek at upcoming AI features. These AI hosts will chime in during music playback, providing relevant stories, trivia, and commentary related to your musical tastes, with YouTube claiming this will 'deepen your listening experience'.
The AI host, named "Beyond the Beat", will pop up periodically while you're listening to mixes and radio stations, aiming to mimic the playful banter of a radio DJ. Unlike Spotify's AI DJ, which creates playlists, the YouTube AI won't generate playlists.
A new button with the Gemini sparkle logo will appear on the Now Playing screen, allowing users to snooze the AI commentary for an hour or the rest of the day. Currently, there's no option to completely disable the AI host within the app; users must opt-out of the entire test if they find "Beyond the Beat" disruptive. YouTube describes this as a way for users to test out cutting-edge AI experiments and influence YouTube's future. Limited US-based participants can sign up at YouTube.com/New. Ars Technica notes that generative AI carries the risk of inaccuracies and low-quality content, but Google's Audio Overviews are often surprisingly good in small doses.
