OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Pulse, a new feature designed to proactively deliver personalised daily updates to users. Currently available as a preview for Pro subscribers on mobile, Pulse analyses a user's chat history, saved preferences, and optionally connected Gmail and Google Calendar accounts overnight. It then provides visual 'cards' containing summaries on relevant topics, such as project follow-ups, dinner suggestions, or travel recommendations.
The aim is to shift ChatGPT from being reactive to proactive, with the AI model conducting overnight research to deliver timely and relevant information. Users can provide feedback on the updates and request specific topics. OpenAI emphasises that this 'asynchronous research' allows ChatGPT to preemptively offer information instead of waiting for user prompts.
Connecting Gmail and Google Calendar allows for even more tailored suggestions, such as drafting meeting agendas or providing birthday gift reminders. OpenAI acknowledges that the feature won't always be accurate and its success rate is variable, but sees Pulse as a step towards 'agentic AI,' where models operate more autonomously. Future versions are planned to connect to more apps and deliver updates throughout the day.
While it's currently exclusive to Pro subscribers on mobile, OpenAI intends to expand Pulse to Plus subscribers and eventually free users after gathering feedback. This move signifies OpenAI's continued exploration of proactive AI assistants.
