Get ready for more post-apocalyptic horror! The highly anticipated sequel, *28 Years Later: The Bone Temple*, directed by Nia DaCosta, is set to release early next year, and the first trailer has just landed. Fans of the *28 Days Later* franchise will be thrilled to see the grim and compelling world revived, hopefully retaining some of the heart from the 2025 film.
For those unfamiliar, *28 Days Later* (2002) is often credited with revitalising the zombie genre. The film depicts the rapid collapse of society following the accidental release of the "Rage Virus" in Cambridge, England. This virus turns people into violent, mindless "fast zombies," spreading quickly through bites, scratches, or even infected blood.
*28 Weeks Later* followed a new set of characters as Britain attempted to rebuild, but as expected, another careless infection led to another uncontrollable outbreak, eventually forcing survivors to flee to France. A third film spent years in development hell, and when production finally got back on track, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland decided to set the film 28 years into the future. This film introduced evolved Alpha zombies, barbaric cults, and Dr. Ian Kelson, who had constructed a temple from cremated human remains.
*The Bone Temple* promises to delve deeper into the inhumanity of the survivors. The official premise reveals that Dr. Kelson finds himself in a shocking new relationship with world-altering consequences. Spike's encounter with Jimmy Crystal becomes a nightmare. Fan-favourite Cillian Murphy will reprise his role as Jim, and Alpha Zombie Samson will return to cause more mayhem. The film is slated for theatrical release on January 16, 2026.
