Measles Death Los Angeles Childs Tragic Complication

A child in Los Angeles has tragically died from subacute sclerosing panencephalitis (SSPE), a rare and fatal brain disorder caused by a measles infection contracted in infancy. The Los Angeles County health department reported the death, highlighting the dangers of measles, especially for vulnerable infants too young to be vaccinated. The child had contracted measles before the recommended age for the MMR vaccine, which is typically administered in two doses between 12 and 15 months.

SSPE arises from a persistent measles infection in the central nervous system. While initially, the child may have experienced typical measles symptoms and seemingly recovered, the virus remained dormant, emerging years later as SSPE. The health department notes that SSPE generally affects about 1 in 10,000 measles cases, but the risk is significantly higher – around 1 in 600 – for infants infected with measles.

Symptoms of SSPE are devastating, progressing through stages of mood and personality changes, uncontrolled movements, vision loss, dementia, and seizures, ultimately leading to coma and death. A case report detailed the harrowing experience of a boy who contracted measles as an infant and developed SSPE at age 11, experiencing rapid physical and mental decline over several months. With declining vaccination rates and the spread of anti-vaccine misinformation, health experts fear a resurgence of these tragic cases, urging the maintenance of high population immunity through routine MMR vaccination.
