Airbus Ditching Microsoft Still a Work in Progress

Airbus's journey to break free from Microsoft's grip on their productivity tools has proven to be a longer and more complex undertaking than initially anticipated. Over seven years ago, the aerospace giant embarked on a mission to migrate its vast workforce of over 100,000 employees from Microsoft Office to Google Workspace. While significant progress has been made, with over two-thirds of the 150,000 employees fully transitioned, the complete switchover remains elusive.

The initial timeline, set by then-CEO Tom Enders, aimed for an 18-month completion. However, as Catherine Jestin, Airbus's executive vice president of digital, acknowledges, this timeline was "extremely ambitious" in retrospect. The challenge lies in the fact that certain departments, such as finance, continue to rely heavily on Microsoft Excel due to limitations in Google Sheets' capacity to handle extremely large files. Some spreadsheets, containing as many as 20 million cells, simply exceed the capabilities of Google's alternative.

Despite these challenges, Airbus remains committed to its goal of fully transitioning to Google Workspace. The company is actively working to address the limitations that are hindering the final stages of the migration. The future plan involves removing some of the work from those huge excel spreadsheets. As technology evolves, and Google Sheets continues to develop its capabilities, Airbus anticipates eventually achieving complete independence from Microsoft's productivity suite.
