Valve is re-entering the VR hardware market with the Steam Frame, a standalone VR headset slated for release in early 2026. This marks Valve's return to VR hardware after the Valve Index, which launched six years ago. The Steam Frame aims to deliver both VR and traditional Steam games, either locally via SteamOS or streamed wirelessly from a PC.
The Steam Frame is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor paired with 16 GB of RAM. It features a 2160 x 2160 resolution display per eye, a field-of-view of up to 110 degrees, and a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, putting it in a similar ballpark to the Meta Quest 3. The headset will be available in 256GB and 1TB storage options, both expandable via microSD. Pricing has yet to be announced.
The headset uses inside-out tracking, eliminating the need for external base stations. The included controllers offer haptic feedback and input parity with traditional gamepads. For PC-powered VR experiences, the Steam Frame will connect wirelessly using a 6 GHz Wi-Fi 6E adapter. Valve is also implementing foveated rendering, which focuses the highest resolution video stream on the user's gaze, aiming for a low-latency connection. The headset includes a 21.6 Wh battery, with battery life varying depending on the game and settings.
The Steam Frame weighs 440 grams, lighter than the Quest 3. Its "core", comprising the essential components, is designed to be modular, potentially allowing for third-party modifications. Valve aims to cater to dedicated VR gamers, especially as competitors shift towards augmented and mixed reality. The device does not support a wired PC connection, as Valve focuses on robust wireless streaming.
