In 1983, during a period of heightened tension in the Cold War, NATO conducted a military exercise called Able Archer 83. This exercise simulated a nuclear war scenario so realistically that Soviet intelligence mistook it for a genuine first strike, bringing the world to the brink of nuclear catastrophe.
The Soviet Union, already on edge due to events such as the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan, the deployment of Pershing II missiles in Germany (capable of reaching Moscow in just 10 minutes), and the Strategic Defence Initiative (Star Wars), interpreted the exercise as a real attack. They subsequently prepared for a large-scale nuclear response, including arming bombers with nuclear weapons and moving missiles into combat positions.
A potential global disaster was averted due to the actions of US General Leonard Perroots who decided against raising the alert level in response to Soviet actions. The incident highlighted the dangerous levels of mistrust and paranoia that existed between the two superpowers and the potential for miscalculation to trigger a nuclear war. It also served as a wake-up call to then-President Reagan, who began to pursue arms control treaties with the Soviet Union, ultimately contributing to the end of the Cold War. The film 'WarGames' also influenced the perception of the dangers of nuclear war at that time.
