Mario Paint The Super Nintendo Classic Arrives on Nintendo Switch

Nostalgia alert! Those who grew up with the Super Nintendo in the early '90s will fondly remember Mario Paint. Originally released in 1992, this creative tool allowed players to draw, paint, and create animated sequences with music. Now, Nintendo is bringing back this classic to the Nintendo Switch and potentially enhancing it for the rumoured Switch 2.

Mario Paint The Super Nintendo Classic Arrives on Nintendo Switch

Nintendo has just added Mario Paint to the Nintendo Switch Online library, its subscription service. This means subscribers can now enjoy this 16-bit era title alongside other classics. An exciting feature of this release is the potential for mouse support, particularly on the speculated Nintendo Switch 2, which could allow users to utilise the Joy-Cons as a mouse in compatible games. While not the same as a dedicated peripheral, early impressions suggest this functionality is surprisingly well-implemented.

For owners of the original Switch or Switch OLED, Mario Paint can be used with any compatible USB mouse. Simply connect the mouse to the dock and you're ready to create, though this option is only available when playing in TV mode. The Switch release includes all the familiar features of Mario Paint, from the interactive logo to the ability to paint on pre-existing templates or create your own masterpieces from scratch. You can also create short animated sequences and compose music to accompany your artwork.

Creations can be saved in two ways: using Mario Paint's integrated save feature, or by creating up to four save states. To save a state, press ZL and ZR simultaneously and select "Save Game." To load a state, repeat the process and select "Load Game".

To access Mario Paint on your Nintendo Switch or Switch 2, you'll need a Nintendo Switch Online subscription. Individual plans are available for 30 days (€3.99), 60 days (€7.99), or 12 months (€19.99). The Expansion Pack, which includes Nintendo 64 and SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive games, costs €39.99 per year. Family plans are also available for €34.99 per year, or €69.99 per year with the Expansion Pack.
