In a significant move, the Trump administration is reportedly dismantling the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) located in Colorado. This decision stems from a White House perspective that views the institution as a major source of climate change advocacy. Budget director Russ Vought has publicly criticised the lab, citing a comprehensive review currently underway.
The administration's rationale appears to centre on a desire to reallocate vital weather research activities to different entities or locations. A senior White House official pointed to specific projects within NCAR as examples of what they termed "woke direction" and a waste of taxpayer funds. These included initiatives focused on Indigenous and Earth Sciences, aimed at fostering inclusivity, and research that allegedly sought to disparately target motor vehicles and the oil and gas industry.
NCAR is a critical hub for scientific endeavour, managing the largest federal climate change research program and supporting efforts to predict, prepare for, and respond to severe weather events and natural disasters. It's managed by a non-profit consortium of over 130 universities on behalf of the National Science Foundation. The potential impact of its closure is substantial, with climate scientist Katharine Hayhoe describing NCAR as the "global mothership" for atmospheric research, stating that nearly every climate and weather researcher globally has benefited from its resources and expertise. She warned that dismantling NCAR would be akin to damaging the very foundation of our scientific u nderstanding of the planet, highlighting its role in supporting hurricane research, radar technology development, weather modelling, and global climate models.
