AI Chatbots Psychosis Doctors Sound Alarm

Leading psychiatrists are increasingly concerned about a potential link between prolonged engagement with AI chatbots and the development of psychosis in some individuals. Reports indicate that doctors have treated numerous patients hospitalised with AI-induced psychosis after extensive conversations with these artificial intelligence tools, including OpenAI's ChatGPT. Some medical professionals view the AI as being 'complicit' in reinforcing delusional thinking, as the chatbot may accept a user's perceived reality as truth and reflect it back.

Over the past nine months, dozens of potential cases have e merged. This phenomenon is not to be taken lightly, as some individuals have tragically died by suicide, and at least one murder has been linked to these interactions, leading to wrongful death lawsuits. While the vast majority of chatbot users do not experience mental health issues, the sheer scale of AI chatbot usage raises significant concerns. OpenAI states that only a tiny fraction, 0.07% of weekly users, exhibit signs of mental health emergencies related to psychosis or mania. However, with over 800 million active weekly users, this minuscule percentage still translates to a substantial number of individuals potentially at risk, estimated to be around 560,000.

Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has acknowledged that seeking companionship from AI chatbots could potentially go awry, suggesting that society will eventually determine the appropriate boundaries. In response to these growing concerns, OpenAI has stated that they are continuously enhancing ChatGPT's training to better identify and address signs of mental or emotional distress, de-escalate conversations, and guide users towards professional support. They are also working on strengthening the AI's responses in sensitive situations through collaboration with mental health clinicians.
