A federal vaccine advisory panel, reportedly hand-picked by anti-vaccine advocate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has voted to remove the recommendation for universal hepatitis B vaccination of newborns on their first day of life. This decision has sparked controversy, as it was made without any presented evidence indicating harm from the current practice or demonstrable benefits from delaying the vaccination.
Numerous public health and medical experts, including some members of the advisory panel itself, have voiced strong opposition to this change. They cite studies and historical data suggesting that delaying or forgoing the birth dose of the hepatitis B vaccine will likely lead to a rise in infections among infants. This, in turn, could result in increased cases of chronic liver disease, liver cancer, and premature deaths. One pediatrician on the committee emphasised that changing the recommendation would actively cause harm, going against the fundamental principle of 'do no harm'.
The committee also suggested that parents and healthcare providers should consider testing a child's antibody levels after each dose of the three-dose hepatitis B series, and potentially foregoing the remaining doses if a certain threshold is met. Medical experts criticised this recommendation too, pointing out that the vaccine's efficacy data is based on the complete three-dose series and antibody levels alone don't guarantee lifelong protection. The recommendation was described as being based on baseless scepticism and compared to 'Never Never Land', due to the lack of data or discussion on the administrative burden or clinical feasibility of such widespread antibody testing.
