Panasonic, a name once synonymous with premium television technology, particularly its legendary plasma displays, is making a significant shift in its business strategy. The company has announced it will no longer be manufacturing its own television sets. Instead, manufacturing, marketing, and sales of Panasonic-branded TVs will be handled by Skyworth, a prominent Chinese electronics manufacturer.

This move marks a pivotal moment for Panasonic, a company that has historically prided itself on in-house production and quality control. Skyworth, which claims to be a leading global provider of the Android TV platform, will now take the reins in the US and European markets, with aspirations for a significant market share in the latter. Panasonic, however, will not be entirely hands-off. The Japanese electronics giant will contribute its expertise and ensure quality assurance, especially for high-end OLED models, which will be jointly developed. The company has also pledged support for all Panasonic TVs currently sold and those to be released until March 2026.
Panasonic's journey in the TV market has been a complex one, marked by significant ups and downs. After dominating the plasma market in the late 2000s and early 2010s, the company exited plasma production in 2014 due to declining demand and economic pressures. This was followed by a phased withdrawal from the US TV market, which it exited completely by 2016. In recent years, Panasonic had attempted a return, outsourcing production in 2021 and re-entering the US market in 2024 with domestically designed and developed OLED and Mini LED TVs. Despite these efforts, the company's president indicated in early 2025 that the TV business was potentially for sale. This latest partnership with Skyworth signals a strategic move to streamline operations and reduce resource investment in its TV division, a trend mirrored by other Japanese electronics firms that have largely exited TV manufacturing, leaving South Korean and Chinese companies to dominate the global market.
