The global shortage of RAM is having a significant impact on PC manufacturing, with HP Inc. reporting that memory now constitutes a staggering 35 percent of the bill of materials for their PCs. This is a dramatic increase from the 15-18 percent it represented just a short time ago. HP's CFO, Karen Parkhill, revealed this during the company's Q1 2026 earnings call, highlighting that memory costs have surged by approximately 100 percent sequentially, with further increases anticipated.
This escalating cost of RAM is a primary drive r behind expected double-digit declines in the total addressable market for HP's Personal Systems business this year, as higher prices are inevitably leading to reduced customer demand. To navigate these challenging market conditions and maintain profitability, HP is implementing several strategies. They are increasing PC prices where possible, though this further exacerbates the demand issue.
Furthermore, HP, like other Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs), is attempting to shift customer focus towards PCs with lower RAM specifications. This helps manage their limited and expensive memory supply. Analysts have previously warned of PC price hikes between 15-20 percent and a trend towards reduced RAM in lower-to-mid-tier configurations. HP's executives have acknowledged this, mentioning the introduction of lower memory configurations and cheaper products with fewer features to balance supply and demand. To secure supply, HP is also leveraging long-term agreements and has exp edited the qualification of new materials by halving lead times. Additionally, they are optimising logistics costs through AI-driven planning processes. Despite these challenges, HP's Personal Systems business saw an 11 percent year-over-year revenue increase in the last quarter, with both consumer and business PC unit sales showing positive growth.
