AI powerhouse Anthropic has leveled serious accusations against Chinese tech giant Alibaba, alleging they orchestrated the most extensive attempt yet to clone Anthropic's advanced AI model, Claude. This alleged attack, which took place between April and June, involved over 28.8 million interactions with Claude through nearly 25,000 fake accounts. Anthropic claims these actions deliberately targeted Claude's most sophisticated capabilities, such as its reasoning, software engineering, and long-horizon task abilities, all while using sophisticated methods to evade detection.
Anthropic's concerns stem from China's rapid pursuit of AI advancements, aiming to match or surpass Western models like Claude. The company sent a letter to US Senators detailing the evidence, warning that such "distillation attacks" could significantly accelerate China's progress, potentially enabling them to achieve capabilities similar to their own Mythos model sooner. Alibaba, in its defence, stated that its operations are independent and focused on commercial applications, not military or intelligence purposes. However, Anthropic remains unconvinced of Alibaba's detachment from potential government interests.
To counter these threats and maintain a competitive edge, Anthropic has urged Congress to implement new legislation. Key recommendations include updating antitrust laws to facilitate information sharing among AI firms regarding evolving foreign tactics, imposing stricter export controls on advanced chips to limit China's access to crucial computational power, and establishing penalties for Chinese AI labs engaging in such illicit behaviour. These penalties could involve restricting access to US AI models, chips, or even data centres outside of China, making it more difficult and costly for them to replicate advanced AI capabilities through cloning efforts.
