SpaceX has open sourced its Grok Build coding tool this week following a significant privacy controversy. The move comes just days after security researchers discovered the AI-powered development tool was collecting users' entire code repositories and uploading them to company-controlled cloud storage without adequate transparency. The backlash was so severe that Elon Musk felt compelled to issue a public statement alongside SpaceX, promising to delete all previously stored data and provide users with greater control over their information.
The privacy concerns first came to light on 12th July when Cereblab, a security research firm, investigated Grok Build's network traffic patterns. Their analysis revealed that the tool was packaging entire repositories as Git Bundles and transmitting them to Google Cloud storage servers. This discovery sparked widespread criticism within the developer community, raising serious questions about data handling practices and user consent.
In response to the mounting pressure, SpaceX announced it would open source the Grok Build codebase after conducting a thorough security audit. The company stated that open sourcing the tool would foster greater trust amongst developers and allow the community to verify its privacy claims. SpaceX emphasised that whilst Zero Data Retention (ZDR) had always been available to enterprise customers by default, it had previously been disabled for other users—a setting that has now been reversed.
According to SpaceX's statement, the company has taken several concrete steps to address privacy concerns. As of 12th July, data retention has been disabled by default for all Grok Build users. Furthermore, SpaceX committed to deleting all previously retained coding data, ensuring that every user's privacy preferences are respected going forward. The company claims these measures position Grok Build ahead of other major coding products in terms of user privacy protection. Users also have the option to run Grok Build entirely locally with their own inference systems.
The open sourced codebase, which comprises 844,530 lines of Rust code according to Datasette creator Simon Willison, still contains remnants of the cloud upload functionality, though these features appear to have been disabled. SpaceX has invited security researchers to examine the code and report vulnerabilities through its bug bounty programme, which offers rewards ranging from £100 to £20,000 depending on severity. Elon Musk further announced plans to make the entire X platform codebase open source following security reviews, with third-party verification to confirm the published code matches what's actually running in production.
